The new 6-part series being shown by the BBC got underway over Christmas and the second episode aired on Sunday.

The first episode of Ripper Street hit our television screens on the 30th of December and has been firmly given a spot on BBC’s Sunday line-up. The BBC mini-series is set in Whitechapel in 1889, just six months after the famous Jack the Ripper murders.

The drama has been met with mixed reviews with some people claiming the first airing in December was decidedly unfestive. Sunday evening’s traditional cosy night is ransacked by the East End drama will a duo of gory episodes.

In all fairness, what were viewers to expect from a series based on Jack the Ripper and his murders. It really wasn’t going to be fluffy bunnies and brightly-coloured rainbows now was it?
If you haven’t enjoyed the past two episodes then perhaps it’s unlikely you will like the commencing four. For those of you that have enjoyed the previous, you’re in for pretty much the same, so stick with it.

Whether you do or do not like Ripper Street there is an alternative way to discover and learn about Jack the Ripper and that is by enduring on the Jack the Ripper Walk. This tour shares the same gruesome truths but means instead of being entertained by impresses camera-action and edits that you can enjoy the tour first-hand.
The Jack the Ripper Walks have technology that no other tour has and that is a hand held projector which indeed projects imagery, some of which has never been seen before, and make you feel like you are reliving the events that happened in 1888.

So, your Sunday nights don’t have to be spent sitting on the sofa watching a program that doesn’t do Jack the Ripper any justice and instead enjoying a much more realistic tour.

BBC’s new mini-series, Ripper Street is finally underway after its production had been wrapped up months ago.

Ripper Street consists of an eight-part series all to be aired over the coming months on a Sunday evening in replace of the much-loved Downton Abbey, so it has some big shoes to fill. The program is set in Whitechapel in 1889, which was six months post Jack the Ripper murders.

The East End-based drama has already been met with mixed views and reviews because of the time and day that it is aired. The program is on a Sunday evening and takes up the 9 pm slot which has been questioned about its goriness for the time it’s on.

Nonetheless the program still has another six episodes, all with the same time slot so it must have been allowed past the censors. A program based around Jack the Ripper was never going to be a perfect family program, so it was likely to expect some gory material.

The plot of the series is in the eyes of the H Division who are responsible for policing part of the East End that is home to a population of around 67,000 people, majority of which are poor and dispossessed. The H Division are dealt with the chaos left by Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel after they had tried to find the murder but failed there had been more women murdered on the streets which gave the H Division the impression that perhaps Jack had returned.

The program was and still is predicted to be popular as there are number of people throughout Britain who are interested in the mysteries of Jack the Ripper and many that endure Jack the Ripper walks and tours. The Jack the Ripper tours give an accurate and untold insight into the history which is arguably much more realistic than the Ripper Street program.

Jack the Ripper Walks offer a fantastic Jack the Ripper Tour around the streets that Jack the Ripper murdered, where his victims were left to die and where the suspects lived. They make these scary murder stories into a fun and factual tour, sure to interest and amaze.

Meanwhile, I thought we’d look at some Jack the Ripper jokes, to make you smile!

Q: What do Winnie the Pooh and Jack the Ripper have in common?

A: The same middle name

***
Q: What fish terrorizes the sea bed?

A: Jack the Kipper

***
Joe was complaining to his friend Jack the Ripper, “I had it all – money, a magnificent house, a fast car, the love of a beautiful woman… then, poof! It was all gone!” “What happened?” asked Jack the Ripper. “My wife found out…”
***

A Journalist is interviewing a man on his 100th Birthday

“So Grampa Jacky, today you’re celebrating your 100th Birthday, How have you managed to live for so long?”

Grampa Jacky replies that he feels that the main reason he has lived so long is because the police never managed to catch Jack the Ripper

***

Jack the Rippers credit card was stolen but he decided not to report it since the thief was spending much less than his wife did.

***

Jack the Ripper meets a genie. The genie tells him he can ask for whatever he wants, but his mother-in-law gets double of what he gets. The man thinks for a moment and says,

“Okay, give me ten million pounds and beat me till I’m half dead.”

***

Jack the Ripper came home drunk one night, it was 3am in the morning and he was greeted by his girlfriend waiting in the entrance hall with a broom in her hand.

Jack asks “What’s going on woman? Are you cleaning the house or have you decided to fly away?”

***

Jack The Ripper says to his girlfriend: You remind me of the sea.
Jacks’ Girlfriend replies: Because I’m wild romantic and reckless?
Jack The Ripper Answers: No because you make me sick!

***

And you know what, Jack the Ripper liked a joke too; just see the following, its part of a letter he sent to the police;

“The police now reckon my work a practical joke well well Jacky’s a very practical joker ha ha Keep this back till three are wiped out and you can show the cold meat”

I think I prefer my jokes to be honest!!!

The children are back in school and the morning air is crisp. September is here! It’s time to wave goodbye to summer and look forward to our very favourite holiday here at Rippervision – Halloween!

We’ll be holding a number of exciting competitions over the next few weeks to get ready for that scariest of times, so watch this space!

In the meantime, we’re looking back to the most frightening autumn of all – that of 1888. By early September, several murders had already struck fear and dread in the heart of the East End. Mary Ann Nichols, the first canonical Ripper victim, was found in the early hours of 31st August, and the details of her murder and the inquest that followed were dissected by the press in gruesome detail. For the women who walked the streets, a new terror dogged their every step. The question on everyone’s lips was, “When will he strike again?” They didn’t have long to wait, of course. Merely days after the inquest was opened on Mary Ann Nichols which would ultimately return a verdict of “Wilful murder by person or persons unknown”, the Ripper claimed his next victim. More on that next week!

On the morning of 7th August, 1888, the body of Martha Tabram was discovered in George’s Yard buildings. She had been stabbed 39 times and left in a stairwell.

Although she is not generally labelled as one of the Ripper’s victims, her death was the beginning of one of the most sensational media frenzies in history.  Headlines screamed of a brutal murder and terror in London’s East End. As the murders continued, fear and panic broke in waves over London, leading to riots and questions about the abilities of the police.

Vigilante groups sprang up and people cowered in their homes and lodging houses. As terror spread, speculation ran rampant and the killer seemed to lurk around every corner.

Over the next few weeks, we will be exploring some of the police investigations, press attention, and vigilante activities that became hallmarks of the Autumn of Terror.

If you want to find out more about the crimes of the Ripper, remember to check out the new DVD that explores the events of Autumn 1888 from a whole :
